Le tecniche di controllo tradizionali, pur garantendo ottime prestazioni quando sia noto il modello matematico del sistema da controllare, presentano dei limiti in presenza di dinamiche non modellate o di variazioni parametriche; tali limiti sono superati ricorrendo a tecniche di controllo di tipo intelligente non lineari. In questo ambito, l’attività svolta si è concentrata sulle metodologie di progetto di controllori fuzzy e fuzzy sliding mode, e sulle problematiche di implementazione su microcontrollori a basso costo e di prototipazione rapida. Le piattaforme adottate per valutare la praticabilità delle soluzioni proposte sono basate su floating-point Motorola PPC a 400MHz (schede dSPACE DS1104) e Infineon C167. Tali metodologie sono state applicate al controllo di sistemi automotive, di rover autonomi per l’esplorazione di ambienti non strutturati, di azionamenti elettrici e di sistemi non lineari da laboratorio (processi di portata, pendolo inverso, etc.).

L’emergere di nuove tecnologie nell’ambito della sensoristica, dell’elettronica, della micro-meccanica, insieme con la comparsa di nuovi strumenti di simulazione e controllo in tempo reale, hanno consentito l’allargamento dell’area di applicazione della scienza del controllo all’ambito automobilistico, favorendo l’introduzione di dispositivi a basso costo a bordo degli autoveicoli. Lo sviluppo di sistemi di controllo può essere semplificato dalla disponibilità di modelli matematici dei sistemi da controllare. Affinché il modello sia in grado di predire il comportamento del sistema reale può essere necessario raggiungere un livello di complessità tale da renderlo inutilizzabile per il controllo. Nella realizzazione del modello occorre quindi trovare un compromesso tra precisione di rappresentazione e semplicità, in modo da renderlo più gestibile al rischio di ridurne la validità. L’attività di ricerca svolta in ambito automotive ha riguardato la modellistica e il controllo di sistemi di alimentazione con turbine a geometria variabile per motori Diesel, di sistemi di iniezione Diesel e CNG, di sospensioni attive. L’approccio alla modellistica adottato è stato sia physics based, sia basato su tecniche di identificazione non lineare. Le metodologie di controllo utilizzate sono state di tipo sliding mode, model based predictive control, fuzzy, o si sono basate su approcci classici, tenendo adeguatamente conto della necessità di ridurre il costo computazionale degli algoritmi, dovuta all’implementazione su centraline elettroniche con potenza di calcolo limitata.

Grazie alla loro semplicità di impiego e taratura, legata anche all’esistenza di regole empiriche per la scelta dei parametri in funzione di caratteristiche ben definite della risposta dei sistemi da controllare, i regolatori di tipo PID hanno trovato larga diffusione in ambito industriale. Tuttavia, le caratteristiche non lineari e di tempo-varianza dei sistemi non permettono di ottenere prestazioni soddisfacenti mediante l’impiego di questo tipo di controllori. In questo contesto, una soluzione innovativa può essere fornita dai cosiddetti controllori frazionari, che sfruttano la possibilità di ottenere risposte in frequenza con pendenze arbitrarie mediante l’impiego di integratori (derivatori) di ordine frazionario, permettendo di migliorare la robustezza alle variazioni parametriche e di migliorare le prestazioni dinamiche. Il maggiore ostacolo all’impiego di questo tipo di controllori è rappresentato dalla mancanza di regole di taratura semplici e che conducano ad una struttura semplificata del sistema di controllo. L’attività di ricerca svolta in questo ambito è stata indirizzata verso questo obiettivo.

Le crescenti richieste di miglioramento delle prestazioni nei sistemi meccatronici hanno messo in evidenza la necessità di un approccio integrato al progetto dei sottosistemi meccanico, elettronico e di controllo. In questo contesto la simulazione può aiutare ad individuare soluzioni ottime di progetto, permettendo di valutare gli effetti di modifiche nelle diverse fasi di sviluppo. L’attività svolta in questo ambito è stata orientata alla definizione di un approccio per lo sviluppo di modelli appropriati per il progetto e l’ottimizzazione di sistemi meccatronici, con particolare attenzione a sistemi di iniezione innovativi per motori CNG, con l’ausilio di strumenti di prototipazione virtuale e tecniche di tipo DOE, MDO e Meta-modelling.
