Multimedia Systems
Multimedia systems are by far the most relevant Internet applications. Video streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Twitch, distribute videos to billions of users worldwide. Controlling those systems has the objective of finding the right balance between the improvement of the user experience and decreasing the distribution costs.
Other relevant multimedia systems are videoconferencing applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet. The control objective here is to provide the best possible visual quality and the lowest latency considered the time varying nature of the internet available bandwidth.
Multimedia systems are also employed in robotics to send sensors data such as 2D videos, omnidirectional videos, and point clouds. Sending such data in real-time is a challenge due to the stringent latency requirements and the very high data volume.
